A special message from the Lord Mayor

Dear Student,
Welcome to Melbourne!

The global focus of our city’s universities has established
Melbourne’s position as one of the world’s top destinations
for higher education. In fact, we are now home to one third
of all international students living in Australia.

With its diverse cultural scene, Melbourne has a huge range
of entertainment, sports and nightlife on offer. Enjoy lively
outdoor cafes, waterfront life at Docklands or the city’s
laneways with their cool bars and fashion boutiques.

Melbourne is one of the world’s great multicultural capitals;
people from more than 150 different countries call this city
home. Our diverse cultural heritage means there are many
community groups regularly meeting across the city. No
matter your language, faith or cultural background you will
find plenty of support.

We encourage students to play an active role. Get involved in
the many art and cultural festivals staged all year round and
make this city your own.

To kick off your study in Australia, we invite you to join us at
the City of Melbourne’s Welcome to International Students
on Saturday 18 July. Come along to the Multicultural Hub,
506 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, from 1pm to 4pm and
enjoy a great afternoon of free activities. Meet other local
and international students, see live reptiles, enjoy street
performers, pick up a bargain at the student market, and
much more. Representatives from Victoria Police, Connex
and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade will also be on hand with
plenty of great street safety activities and information.

The City of Melbourne recognises the many contributions
international students make to our City while studying. It is
our goal to ensure a safe, rewarding and inspiring
environment as you strive to complete your degree.
Attend this event and learn more about the activities and
support the City of Melbourne offers all students new to the
city.

For more information about the event and other activities
happening in the city visit our website at
www.melbourne.vic.gov.au or call 9658 9658.
While living here, you are great ambassadors for your
homelands. When you leave, we hope the experiences you
have had with us make you ambassadors for Melbourne too.

Robert Doyle
Lord Mayor of Melbourne
