 Double trouble for Southbank
A crane lost its load of plaster coinciding with a
suspected fire that reportedly broke out on the seventeenth
floor of Melbourne Tower. Two fire brigade units arrived at
the scene only minutes after residents ducked for cover to
dodge the debris raining down from above.
At about 1.15 PM workers scrambled from the building site
at 180 City Rd to remove the broken boards and direct the
traffic in the area.
Firemen and their trucks also blocked residents access in the
affected City Rd area.
Four or five cars received minor damage as the large
splinters of white builders board showered over them.
Although there were many pedestrians in the area, many
being evacuees from the Melbourne Tower, no one was hurt.
The street resembled the effects of a snow storm as the
white powder showered down.
The Summit apartments on the sixth floor facing the street
collected debris from the incident, which was cleared quickly
by Multiplex workers.
As a result, police closed the street from Power St and City
Rd down to Melbourne Tower as Multiplex workers swept up
the the plaster board and the resulting white gypsum
powder that stained the road.
At 3.00PM the street was still closed with traffic backed up
at the detours.
As one Multiplex workers said, "There will be a lot of paper
work to fill out as a result of this".
